Below I’ve listed the most important of the primary source material related to topics I often cover in Badrabbit – fetish photography especially. I plan to have more information about these items in the Pages section, but until then here’s a quick survey.
Charles Guyette
Richard Pérez Seves, editor. Charles Guyette: Godfather of American Fetish Art. Vintage Fetish, second edition 2017. Filled with full-page photographs, this is a breakthrough book about this important figure in early fetish production in the United States. The author identifies several of Guyette’s models, includes a 1940s article/interview, and has a well-researched text. Available on Amazon.
John Willie
Eric Kroll, editor. The Complete Reprint of John Willie’s Bizarre. Koöln: Taschen, 1995. This reprint, in two volumes, contains all the issues published by John Willie before selling the magazine to R.E.B. in 1956. First published in 1946 with issue number two, issue number one appeared in 1954, this magazine contained examples of Willie’s early fetish photography, his cartoons, his writing and his artwork along with the work of others. There are errors of fact in Kroll’s introduction. Out of print. Available on sites like Ebay or Abe Books.
J. B. Rund, editor. The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline by John Willie. New York: Belier Press, 1999. A collection of all extant cartoon materials by John Willie, the edition also includes other artwork, examples of his correspondence and a short biography by the editor. A well-done edition; a comparison of the cartoons and photographs shows they came from the same well. Available from the publisher. The Badrabbit review of this book.
J. B. Rund, editor. Possibilities: The Photographs of John Willie. New York: Belier Press, 2016. This is a comprehensive collection of photographs taken by John Willie in Australia before 1946 and afterwards in the United States until his death. The majority of photographs have not been published elsewhere. A handsome edition available from the publisher. The Badrabbit review of this book.
Eric Stanton
Richard Pérez Seves. Eric Stanton & the History of the Bizarre Underground. Atglen, Pennsylvania: Schiffer Publishing Ltd. 2018. Stanton was amongst the small group of fetish artists who worked in the United States in the late 1940s into the 1950s and later. These artists, more than the photographic work of Guyette and Willie, helped create today’s fetish style and fashion. Available on Amazon.
Biederer Bothers
Alexandre Dupouy, editor. Les Éditions Ostra: L’áge d’or du Fetichisme. Paris: Éditions Astarté. 2007. Their photographs were sold as post cards, prints, or used as illustrations. Their work ranged from cheesecake pinup to nudes to fetish to pornography, often with a certain sense of style. Charles Guyette reprinted French photographs, including those by the Biederer brothers who worked in Paris in the late 1920s through the 1930s. Available through sites like Ebay and Abe Books.
Leonard Burtman
Leonard Burtman was a producer of fetish magazines, catalogs, and photographs, starting in the 1950s. He is best known for his magazine Exotique which had stories, photographs, artwork, and comics. Badrabbit reviewed the 1995 Taschen reprint of the first 36 issues of Exotique in a 3 volume slipcased set.
